Britain’s biggest paving job

The transformation of Hull as the 2017 UK City of Culture was a huge undertaking with more than 40,000 square metres of paving laid as part of construction work, making this Britain’s biggest paving project.

The work was carried out by Eurovia on behalf of Hull City Council. Dozens of paving gangs working with forced action mixers spent months on a challenging timetable to deliver a magnificent end result for March when the City celebrated its recognition. Along with renewing historic areas of town including the Fruit Market and dealing with the intricacies of specialist braille paving in Jameson Street, there were tricky water features and ironworks to contend with along the way. 
All the paving elements of the project were laid using Steintec materials: tuffbed 2-pack, tuffset G, tuffbond and tufftop.

As part of its added value services throughout the project, Steintec established local distribution arrangements up to ensure products, machinery and tools were readily available round the clock. Dedicated Steintec experts were on hand to deliver on-site technical support to the Eurovia project team and its contractors, as well as early consultation with architects Re-Form Landscapes which continued until the project was complete.
