Instruction on grouting with SteinTec tufftop paving mortar
Jointing/Grouting with tufftop
Prepare the area to be grouted
Wet the paving, joints and bedding prior to grouting.
Use plenty of water to saturate the entire area.
Any excess water will be displaced by the jointing mortar.
Mix the grout with water
Mix the grout with the appropriate amount of water according to the method statement or as printed on the bag.
The grouting mortar should be mixed thoroughly so there are no dry lumps. Ideally a mechanical mixer should be used to ensure a consistent flowable consistency is achieved.
It should be as thick as possible whilst wetted throughout.
The mixture should not be too wet as some of the ingredients will be washed away, it should be only just pourable.
Pour the mixed jointing mortar over the area to be grouted
The jointing mortar should be poured over the area to be grouted.
Note: In this case the TuffGrout mortar is a bit too wet and runny, it should be thicker for a fuller joint, quicker and easier application and cleaning.
Fill the joints with the grout
Draw the grout across the surface with a "squeegie" so that it flows in to the joints of the paving.
Do not allow air to be trapped in the joint, allow the mortar to flow into the joint so that air and water rise out.
To achieve this the grout should be spread at an angle to the direction of the joints, this also prevents the material being raked out of the joints.
Excess water will rise to the surface as the grout compacts in the joints and fills them.
Clean the pavement surface
Keep wetting the surface with a light shower of water.
Do not let the surface become dry.
Do not water the surface with a direct jet of water, this will wash out the jointing mortar.
Remove excess water and residue from the surface by drawing the squeegie across the surface.
Again, do not work in the direction of the joints to avoid removing grout material.
Keep wetting and removing residue and water until the surface is clean.
This process may require several passes with the squeegie and water.
