Slabs
Pedestrian or vehicular traffic?
Slabs may be laid using one of three methods:
Fully unbound - for this you do not require any of our products but our technical experts will be happy, all the same, to discuss unbound construction in detail.  This is a viable method for pedestrian areas.
Bound surface course laid over a on-rigid base.  This method of construction is suitable for pedestrian areas only.
Fully bound - Slabs laid onto a rigid concrete base using bedding and jointing mortar.  This method of construction will support heavy traffic using the modern systems described in BS7533-12:2006
Pedestrian only areas
Where natural stone slabs and precast concrete flags are to be laid in areas subjected to only pedestrian trafficking, where no heavy vehicles may gain access, the choice exists between laying over a concrete base or an unbound or bituminous base.

Slabs laid over an unbound or bituminous base may be rigidly bedded and jointed, using mortar, so facilitating vacuum cleaning régimes.

Slabs laid over a concrete base can support heavy vehiclur traffic and also can use thinner slabs, saving vaulable natural resources.
Heavily trafficked areas
Where natural stone slabs and precast concrete flags are to be laid in areas subjected to heavy vehicular trafficking, a concrete base must be provided in accordance with BS7533-12:2006

Slabs laid over a concrete base can support heavy vehiclur traffic and also can use relatively thinner slabs, saving valuable natural resources.
